The Last of Us Season 2 Episode 2 made a huge mistake by changing the pacing of Joel’s storyline. Fans are already calling it out. Have you noticed it?

Warning: heavy spoilers for The Last of Us season 2 episode 2 ahead!

Aah yes, there's nothing quite like the sweet taste of rushed plotlines and action just for the sake of it. While The Last of Us continues to deliver some mind-blowing acting, something feels off. And by something, I mean the way they handled Joel's death.

I'm not saying that Joel's death wasn't emotional (I cried my eyes out). But the way they rushed through it in the first two episodes? Come on, HBO. We needed more time to process that massive moment.

The Last of Us Season 2 Missed the Opportunity to Be Make Joel’s Death More Impactful

In the first episode of Season 2, it was evident that the Joel/Abby storyline was being handled differently. We got hints that Abby was out for Joel too early in the series, and that ruined the effect the game had.

The most devastating part is that Joel's death scene itself was spectacular. I would even go as far as to say that it had more impact than the game version. Yet without that proper build up, it inevitably loses its intensity (though thanks to great acting, it still makes you feel for characters deeply).

But can you imagine the impact it would have if they combined that incredible scene with the game-treatment it deserved?

HBO, Bella Ramsey, Pedro Pascal: does it ring a bell yet?

“This felt late seasons GoT to me which def was intentional with the Jackson zombie bs. No actual plot motivation just drivel to get people excited with action. I have no idea how they maintain interest from here. It’s easy to have a game where you’re taking out people for revenge, but if it’s just following only Ellie like she’s Arya Stark then it’s going to be a giant snooze,” Redditor odd_orange wrote.

“HBO killing Joel on Easter like they had Tyrion kill Tywin on Fathers Day, they love a good holiday drop don’t they,” Redditor savannahsalvatore3 said.

“Pedro Pascal dying brutally and a horde of zombies attacking a fortress during winter? Welcome back Game of Thrones,” savannahsalvatore3 joked again.

The Last of Us Season 2: New Episodes Release Date

While some of the changes may be controversial, The Last of Us remains one of the most entertaining shows on television right now. The series continues every Sunday at 9pm ET on HBO and Max.
