Catherine O'Hara's new character in The Last of Us has just paved the way for the second season’s biggest mystery so far.

HBO’s hit series The Last of Us is back on track with a bunch of new characters who have already started pushing the storyline forward, though it’s not only Abby who will likely change everything in the now established life in Jackson.

The first episode of season 2 also delves into Joel’s personal matters he has someone special to talk to about, and this time fans of the video game might have no clue about what this is all about.

Who Is Eugene in The Last of Us?

The second season’s first episode introduces Catherine O'Hara's Gail, a therapist who helps those in Jackson cope with everything they have to go through in the post-apocalyptic world.

It’s also revealed Joel has regular sessions with her, the latest of which sees Gail breaking down when she suddenly accuses Joel of killing her husband, Eugene.

In the original video game, Eugene was a minor character who has actually never been seen on the screen but only heard of; on top of that, there was no mention of Gail whatsoever, since Eugene was believed to have a wife named Claire and a daughter.

There’s not so much to know about the character, though the game also reveals Eugene was a former Firefly who abandoned his family for later joining the resistance. The show, apparently, takes different turns in the character’s story, and there’s some reason behind it.

Possible Reasons Why Joel Had to Kill Eugene, Explained

So far The Last of Us hasn’t given any clear indication for what happened between Joel and Eugene; however, some fans might have got a clue after Gail admits to Joel she understands that he had no other choice.

This likely implies Eugene becoming infected at some point, but not only this — among the show and the video game’s fans, Joel is known as a ruthless man who will protect his truth even when it comes to eliminating normal people and not infected ones.

Since Eugene might turn out to be a former Firefly in the HBO’s series as well, there can be some secret he was holding until Joel figured it out, thus in fact having no other choice but to silence Eugene.

It’s quite possible that the latter gave different reasons for others to consider him dangerous, which is what could have prompted Joel to execute Eugene as well.

The Last of Us’ season 2 episode 2 is airing on Max on April 20. There will be seven episodes in season 2.
