'The Last of Us' Season 3 Gets Sudden Update from Craig Mazin: "I Get to be a Monk for a While"

Neil Druckmann’s departure after The Last of Us’ season 2 seemingly doomed the series, but not Craig Mazin’s belief that he’ll carry it all himself with the next instalment.
Things have been pretty shaky for HBO’s The Last of Us ever since its second season’s premiere episode dropped back in April, causing a commotion among the original game’s fans.
Criticised for whatever reason, the instalment passed on the torch to a third season, though it all seemingly went down the drain even faster once Neil Druckmann announced his decision to step away from the series.
Without the original video game’s creator on board, The Last of Us was (almost) officially proclaimed dead by its audiences, but the series’ second creator and now the only showrunner Craig Mazin is far from giving in to nasty comments.
In fact, he seems to have gone quite far in The Last of Us’ season 3 script as well.
Craig Mazin Says “The Pages Are Happening” for ‘The Last of Us’ Season 3
Whether that’s bad news for the show’s haters or good news for those who still have hope in the story’s improvement, Mazin’s enthusiasm is something to definitely be jealous of.
Nearly three months after the second season wrapped, the showrunner is all about preparing things for the upcoming season which he’s now helming all alone.
“This is kind of my favorite time. It’s very quiet. It’s just sitting here with my wonderful ergonomic keyboard and clacking away. The pages are happening, and I get to be a monk for a while, which I love, and I just write. It’s the purest form of what I do”, Mazin revealed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter recently.
Apart from that, he also gave a promising update on when The Last of Us’ season 3 will get into production, though, considering the show’s release dynamics, we still shouldn’t be just as optimistic as Mazin himself.
“And then in just a couple of months or so, that happy time will start to be less quiet because we begin a very long prep period while I’m still writing, and then we begin to shoot while I’m still writing”, the showrunner added.
Neil Druckmann’s Departure From ‘The Last of Us’ Changes Little, Craig Mazin Says
While many fans thought Druckmann was more present for the HBO adaptation as one of the original game’s creators, it seems like the situation was quite the opposite.
As Mazin suggested, he mostly worked independently from Druckmann who had to divide time between the series’ filming set and “Naughty Dog” where he is the studio head.
“Neil’s always had a full-time job running Naughty Dog, so it’s always been me up in Canada [where the production is], and, ultimately, things are pretty much going to proceed as usual”, Mazin said.
The Last of Us’ season 3 is still far from getting its release date, but the new instalment is unlikely to arrive on HBO Max earlier than sometime in 2027.
