The Last of Us made a huge mistake by not embracing its grimier side. The Walking Dead did it so much better, fans say.

The Last of Us has secured its place as one of HBO's most groundbreaking series. Just like the video games it is based on, the series has done a great job of balancing heartbreaking storytelling with nail-biting suspense.

However, not everything is exactly right. In fact, dare we say some things are even too perfect.

The Last of Us' Characters Look Too Clean For Post-Apocalypse

We've all been annoyed by shows where characters manage to stay perfectly put together while fighting for their lives. Surprisingly, The Last of Us, a series that needs to have a very realistic core, has stumbled into this very trap.

In episode 5, Ellie and Dina continue their journey. However, neither of them seem too tired (and just to remind you, it's an exhausting trip). Their hair is nicely done, they don't really have any signs of exhaustion on their skin. Their clothes look neat as well.

What Do The Last of Us’ Fans Think About This?

“It’s also a bit jarring how Dina looks like a damn super model in almost every scene. Like … CW levels of clean and pretty. It’s so off. Like she came from the theatre show of Last of Us on ice. They need that walking dead level of gritty look,” Redditor Asajj66 wrote.

The CW is criticized by many for its cheesy teen dramas that tend to sugarcoat pretty much everything from superhero shows to post-apocalyptic YA stories.

“She [Dina] looks like she just had a tuttifrutti scented bubble bath with a nourishing macadamia leave in conditioner. Ellie also looks sterile, her hair is perfectly slicked back after running, dodging and beating stuff up,” Redditor nymrose shared.

Why Do These Small Details Matter in The Last of Us Universe?

This may seem like a nitpick, but it’s actually quite important for the overall immersion of the show. The post-apocalyptic world of The Last of Us deserves the right treatment, and it's these little things that add up and make the story believable.

When characters look too polished, it breaks the illusion of the reality they have to face. And The Last of Us world is brutal.

This issue is getting more weird when you realize that HBO is known to not shy away from grittier things. Game of Thrones wasn't afraid to show its characters covered in mud, blood, and sweat. House of the Dragon followed this tradition, too. So why is The Last of Us playing it safe?

Where & When to Watch the Next Episode of the Last of Us?
