HBO has ordered exactly three seasons. The only showrunner left on the series has been saying for over a year that the story needs four.

The short answers first. The Last of Us season 3 arrives in 2027 — that's from HBO chief Casey Bloys, with no month attached yet. The episode count hasn't been announced, but the season is described as significantly larger than season 2's seven episodes. And the total is where it gets interesting: there is no season 4 order, while the man running the show insists the ending doesn't fit without one.

Craig Mazin said it plainly back in May 2025, to Collider via TVLine, before season 2 had even finished airing:

"There's no way to complete this narrative in a third season. Hopefully, we'll earn our keep enough to come back and finish it in a fourth."

— Craig Mazin, May 2025

He called four seasons "the most likely outcome." A year and a half later, HBO still hasn't made it official — which means the series is filming its biggest season ever against an ending that technically doesn't exist yet.

What season 3 actually is

Season 3 is the Abby season. Kaitlyn Dever's WLF soldier takes over as the lead, with the story following her after the events of season 2, alongside Jeffrey Wright's Isaac and Jorge Lendeborg Jr. as Manny (recast from Danny Ramirez). Bella Ramsey's Ellie is in it, with a reduced role — the same perspective flip the second game pulled, now stretched across a full season.

Production facts, for the calendar math:

  • Filming: started March 2, 2026, in British Columbia, scheduled to wrap November 27, 2026.
  • New faces: Patrick Wilson as Jerry, Peter Sarsgaard, John Goodman, Clea DuVall, Li Jun Li, and the game's original Abby, Laura Bailey.
  • The post window: season 2 wrapped filming in August 2024 and premiered in April 2025. The same gap puts season 3 in mid-2027.

The showrunner math

The four-season plan now rests on one person. Neil Druckmann, the games' creator and co-showrunner, stepped away in July 2025 to focus on Naughty Dog's next game, and writer Halley Gross left around the same time. Mazin runs the show solo and directed the season 3 premiere himself.

Season 3 was renewed before season 2 aired a single episode. Season 4 hasn't been renewed with season 3 nearly done filming.

That asymmetry is the real story of the release cycle. Season 2 lost viewers and goodwill in the back half, and HBO's silence on season 4 — for a flagship that used to get renewed sight unseen — reads like a network waiting to see whether the Abby gamble lands. If it does, expect the final-season order fast. If it doesn't, Mazin's "most likely outcome" becomes the most expensive cliffhanger on television.
