It's no secret that for many fans of TBBT, Bernadette became one of the most hated characters on the show.

The introduction of Howard's high-pitched and innocent-seeming romantic interest, quickly revealed herself to be short-tempered and highly passive-aggressive to the fans' dismay.

Ironically, in the beginning, she was only meant to appear temporarily as a guest role but was eventually kept on as a fully-fledged character in the series.

Interestingly, the fans' hatred of Bernadette has nothing to do with the actress and much more with the character's development throughout the show.

In fact, many support actress Melissa Rauch and her role within the series, but feel the show's writing let both the character and herself down.

Comparing the character from her introduction in the series to how she was presented at the show's end, Bernadette went from being a loveable and caring person to someone who often seemed shrill, selfish, arrogant and rude.

What's more, although the fans agree their relationship helped mature Howard from being a creepy womanizer to a dedicated friend and father. The worst aspects of Bernadette's personality were amplified after the pair married in the series.

Not long after, the character of Howard's mother (as well as the talented Carol Ann Susi who played her) died on the show.

From that point onwards, Bernadette seemed to take the role of the nagging, annoying presence in Howard's life. Making the audience feel much less favorable to a character who was once so likable.

In an interview on the Jennifer Hudson Show, Rauch revealed that when her character of Bernadette was introduced in the series, she was only meant to appear as a guest role.

However, after the producers saw potential in the character, Rauch was asked to return for a few more episodes and then eventually signed as a main cast member for good.

Rauch is clearly thankful for her time in Big Bang, as she remembers the very week before she got the role, she was at the unemployment office as a result of lack of work.

Due to the vast success of the series, it was reported that the main cast would go on to earn $1 million per episode each.

It's unfortunate that Rauch was so hard done by the show's writing, as clearly fans were very supportive of Bernadette when she was introduced.

If only the show had kept to the character's original temperament, she would never have likely topped the most hated character list of TBBT.
