The Mummy’s Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz might be returning for a long-awaited movie that will bring some major changes to the entire franchise.

Things have been pretty unclear about The Mummy franchise’s future for quite some time now, but it seems like fans of the Brendan Fraser-led movies will get what they want after all.

For years since the series’ third film titled The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor was released back in 2008, a rumor has been circulating about a possible sequel or rather a remake, with not so many viewers being enthusiastic about it after Tom Cruise’s failed attempt to reboot The Mummy.

However, the franchise’s comeback is looking much better after the recent news involving both the series’ leading stars Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, though the future movie will completely ignore a major part of the franchise’s lore.

Though this hasn’t yet received any confirmation from The Mummy’s traditional distributing company Universal, sources like The Hollywood Reported suggest the new project won’t start the entire story from scratch and will continue with Fraser and Weisz as the leads.

However, the film will completely ignore the events of The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, the franchise’s third movie.

It’s also important to note that both actors are currently in talks to reprise their roles, but haven’t yet moved on to signing the official document.

Additionally, the future sequel is already confirmed to be directed by Radio Silence’s Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett who rose to prominence thanks to the 2019 horror Ready or Not.

‘The Mummy’ Fans Have Several Reasons to Celebrate New Sequel

Though The Mummy’s return might not have been on many fans’ 2026 bingo cards, those who rewatch the first two movies over and over again have a couple of new reasons to wait for the announced movie.

Apart from the fact that both Fraser and Weisz will likely return as Rick O’Connell and Evelyn Carnahan, The Mummy’s fans can’t be happier about Brendan Fraser finally getting more recognition after having spent several years without a single major role in Hollywood.

“it’ll just be cool to see Brendan Fraser doing something BIG again. He’s just so charming and fun in the first two Mummy movies, I don’t remember much of the Tomb of the Dragon Emperor anymore so the less said about that, the better unfortunately”, Redditor Magik-Mina-MaudDib shared in a thread.

“The Brendan Fraser Renaissance continues! Hell yeah!” AvengingHero2012 agreed.
