The Oval season 5 cast: who died? The premiere's big death didn't last until episode two
Tyler Perry's The Oval is a show where the First Lady and the Second Lady go over a balcony together and both walk it off. So when the Season 5 premiere ended with a character taking a chestful of bullets in a hotel room, longtime viewers knew better than to send flowers.
The premiere: Bobby gets shot
October 17, 2023. Bobby, played by Travis Cure, has just wrapped an extremely uncomfortable hotel encounter with Priscilla when her husband Sam, played by Walter Fauntleroy, kicks the door in and empties a gun into him. Sam then turns to his wife and delivers a line that instantly entered the Perry canon alongside "Ashtray, bitch":
"Bitch, get home and wash my f***ing clothes."
Cut to credits. Recaps everywhere reported a major character death. The internet did its thing.
Episode two: he's fine
One week later, Bobby is dragging himself to a bathtub and explaining, per TVLine, that everyone overreacted:
"They were just warning shots — rubber bullets, non-lethal. Sam knows what he's doing. If he wanted me dead, he would have gone for the kill shot."
So the season's opening death survived roughly seven days. Priscilla's reaction in that scene, asking a man who'd just been shot whether he was "OK," suddenly reads less like shock and more like foreshadowing.
Who actually died in Season 5
- Barry (Vaughn W. Hebron). Missing since Season 4, presumed dead for ages, officially confirmed dead in the episode "Breaking News." He'd been searching for his daughter and ran into D.C. organized crime. This is the one Season 5 death that stuck.
- Bobby: not dead. See above.
- Everyone in the finale: unclear, on purpose
That last bullet needs explaining.
The finale massacre
The Season 5 finale aired March 12, 2024, and ended with Hunter ordering mercenaries to open fire on Victoria's entire side of the room. Hunter, Victoria, Jason, Donald, Kyle, Eli, Simone, Sam, Max, Bobby, Richard and Priscilla were all standing there when the shooting started.
Which sounds like a Red Wedding. TVLine compared it more to Dynasty's Moldavian massacre, where a room full of people get sprayed with gunfire and nobody important dies. That's the safer bet. The reveal of who survived was held for the Season 6 premiere in January 2025, per Blavity, because this show has never once let a cliffhanger resolve inside the same season.
On The Oval, a bullet is a plot device, not a cause of death. Rubber, warning, off-screen, in a cliffhanger. Anything but final.
The man who keeps not dying
Travis Cure has been Bobby since Season 1, when he was just "the handsome stranger" hitting on the Chief of Staff's wife. He's a former Marine, and he told Upscale Magazine that he got the job the way people get jobs on Tyler Perry shows:
"I was actually at the gym, working out, when Tyler Perry himself called me. He asked if I could come in to audition for Bobby, Max, or Kareem. It was surreal!"
Five seasons later, Bobby has been shot at, pointed guns at people, hidden in cabins and cheated on multiple White House marriages. Killing him with rubber bullets would have been the least dramatic exit available, and this show does not do least dramatic.
