The Joker sequel has received mixed responses so far, with some people excited about the second movie, and others not so sure why it needed to be done in the first place.

Actor Brendan Gleeson has become a part of Todd Phillips' Joker sequel in what appeared to be a surprising casting addition to a lot of people. The In Bruges star joined the creative crew of a movie that has already established itself as quite quirky: not only has it signed Lady Gaga up but also turned to the genre of musical – a pretty bold combination when one remembers that it is a comic book movie adaptation we're talking about.

Gleeson's reasons for joining the cast appeared to have little with desire to experiment. In fact, it wasn't even the script that attracted the actor, as he shared with Collider.

"It wasn't the material, which is a great way to get me out of having to answer any questions about the criteria. It was the achievement of the first film. I worked with Joaquin before on The Village... And so I knew him from then. And that performance, I'm still in awe of it. That performance as Joker, in that first movie. It was one of the most extraordinary achievements I've ever had. And for Todd to have – Worked the movie around to allow for that, I didn't have to be asked twice. I really didn't," Gleeson revealed.

The Joker sequel is titled Folie à Deux, which translates into "madness for two" – something that many fans saw as an indicator of a possible Harley Quinn cameo. While many people have already suggested that Gaga will reprise the role of Quinn, details about Gleeson's character still remain under wraps. The Irish actor has refused to provide any hints.

The Joker sequel won't mark the first time when Gleeson and main star Joaquin Phoenix work together, as they have already met on the set of M. Night Shyamalan's The Village in 2004.

Folie à Deux is currently set to premiere in theaters on October 4, 2024. Plot details remain a mystery as of now.
