The OA was a very promising sci-fi show that Netflix cut short. Here's why the platform didn't want to continue with the original five-season plan.

By now, The OA could have been mentioned alongside Stranger Things and Dark as a weird and brilliant sci-fi series that pushed boundaries. Instead, it vanished after two seasons, leaving fans confused and desperate for answers.

While there are a lot of reasons why shows get canceled, the main issue with The OA boiled down to numbers. Poor marketing meant fewer viewers discovered it, while its big budget made it expensive to produce. Ultimately, Netflix chose to prioritize shows that could attract more subscribers.

The Real Reason Why the OA Was Cancelled: Quantity Over Quality

Ultimately, Netflix chose to pump out more shows instead of keeping the quality ones going. It got obsessed with attracting new subscribers rather than keeping their current fans happy. The OA ended up in this awkward middle spot: it had devoted viewers who loved it, but not enough to justify its price tag under Netflix's new gameplan.

But while we're all pissed at Netflix for cancelling such a great show, in her interview to Salon Brit Marling spoke with a lot of grace about the platform and even teased the possible reurn by saying:

“You know, to be honest, it's so hard to see a story end early... I think Netflix is amazing cause there was this moment in time when it was taking really wild bets and so bless them for making The OA. [I'm] very grateful for that experience and who knows? Shows do come back. Twin Peaks came back at some point.”

Would you love for ‘The OA’ to come back?

‘The OA’ Fans Are Still Mad About the Cancellation

“I am just gutted that this show has been cancelled. I knew that when I started to watch for the first time and I probably shouldn’t have bothered watching as Netflix breaks my heart over and over,” Redditor clementinemagnolia wrote.

“I don't know what it is about The OA but I cried for its loss in a way I never have for anything else. I dream about one day finding out its ending. Must be time for a rewatch,” another fan, HarryPouri on Reddit said.
