Discussions about the second season began almost immediately after the release of the first season. Netflix officially announced Season 2 in November 2022.

The trailer released in April revealed the exact release date.

The second season will consist of twelve episodes. The remaining six episodes will be available three weeks later, on July 24.

In the first season of The Sandman, Morpheus, having been freed from a long imprisonment, attempts to regain control of the Dreaming. By the end of the season, he had regained his powers, destroyed the Corinthian, and stopped the destruction of reality.

In the second season, Morpheus will reunite with his entire family of the Endless. He will attempt to rectify past mistakes in an effort to save the Dreaming and the world of humans, even if it means he must sacrifice himself, as he explicitly hints in the newest official trailer for season 2.

Season 2 will adapt stories such as "Season of Mists," "The Sandman: Overture," "Brief Lives," and "The Kindly Ones."

Neil Gaiman Scandal & Its Influence on 'The Sandman' and Other Adaptations

Showrunner Allan Heinberg said that Morpheus's story will come to an end in the upcoming season since the original comic doesn't have enough material for another chapter.

However, this decision was likely made in connection with the scandal surrounding Neil Gaiman. In the summer of 2024, four women accused the writer of sexual harassment and shared their experiences on the podcast Master: The Allegations Against Neil Gaiman.

One of the accusers, a former nanny, said that Gaiman sexually abused and humiliated her while she worked in his house. Gaiman denied the accusations, claiming that what the women described did not happen.

Despite Gaiman's denial, many companies decided to stop working with him. Netflix canceled The Sandman spinoff Dead Boy Detectives, Disney scrapped the adaptation of his novel The Graveyard Book, and Amazon halted production on the third season of Good Omens.

Consequently, Gaiman was forced to leave his post as showrunner of Good Omens, and production of the series resumed. However, instead of releasing a full final season, Amazon decided to drop only one 90-minute episode.

In January 2025, the scandal surrounding Gaiman flared up again with renewed vigor when four more women came forward with accusations of sexual harassment.
