However, it might not work with cats in some certain circumstances.

Even those who have never had a cat know that these animals are naturally gifted with an ability to find their way around on any territory. There’s a ton of cases of cats that somehow found their home after being lost miles away, which is why their owners and people in general keep wondering how it can happen anyway.

According to animal experts, cats do have a specific feature that helps them navigate well, but it’s unlikely to work with quite many domesticated cats.

How Do Cats Find Their Way Back Home?

As numerous studies have shown, cats have some sort of inner GPS function that many also refer to as inner compass. Still, experts suggest the development of this function depends on each pet individually.

For instance, if your cat has never been outside and feels uncertain exploring the territory outside the house, it’s very likely it will get lost once it’s on its own in the street. Alternatively, cats that grew up on the streets or in villages are experienced enough to use their inner compass as some sort of guidance.

As for the city, many cats living in suburbans might not be able to find their way back home from miles away, but will still manage to get back to their house if it’s not that far.

Do You Actually Need to Let Your Cat Out Frequently?

Even though most cats likely have this developed skill of finding their way back home, experts suggest you don’t rely on it too much. You’ll never know whether your cat will actually get back home safe and sound in case it somehow got lost, so make sure you keep an eye on the pet all the time.

It’s recommended you let your cat out of the house for a while, but make sure to bring it back home shortly after, especially if it’s not used to spending much time outside.
