Aaron Sorkin's Facebook sequel has an Oscar-bait cast, a $50 million price tag, and critics who aren't allowed to talk until Wednesday.

Sixteen years after The Social Network opened at No. 1 with $22.4 million, Aaron Sorkin is back at Facebook, this time writing and directing. The Social Reckoning hits roughly 2,500 theaters on October 9, 2026. Critics, however, don't get to weigh in until October 7 at 9 a.m. ET, two days before release, per The Hollywood Reporter. A Wednesday embargo for a Friday opening is not what a studio does when it can't wait for you to read the reviews.

What the trackers are saying

  • Boxoffice Pro: $6 million to $10 million.
  • Box Office Theory: $8 million to $13 million.
  • World of Reel: $4 million to $6 million, against a reported budget of around $50 million.

For comparison, Boxoffice Pro's own comps include Sony's Saturday Night, which made $3.4 million when it went wide in October 2024, and First Man, which opened to $16 million in 2018. The competition isn't kind, either. Jessica Chastain's horror movie Other Mommy opens the same day in about 3,200 theaters and is tracking at $15 million to $25 million, while Tom Cruise's Digger, the other grown-up option at the multiplex, is already sliding after a rough debut. The Social Network, for the record, went on to make $225 million worldwide in 2010.

Our prediction: $7 million. It's an adult-skewing drama with no franchise hook, the late embargo leaves almost no time for reviews to sell tickets, and the early word is warm rather than rapturous. Even the high end of every tracker leaves it short of half of The Social Network's opening.

The movie itself

This one's less about Mark Zuckerberg than about the 2021 Facebook leak. Mikey Madison plays whistleblower Frances Haugen, and Jeremy Allen White plays Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz. Jeremy Strong, in his third Sorkin film, takes over Zuckerberg from Jesse Eisenberg, who turned the role down. Bill Burr, Wunmi Mosaku, Betty Gilpin, and Billy Magnussen round out the cast. It's rated R and runs 113 minutes.

Sony reportedly greenlit the movie as an awards play, and Sorkin has directed three features before this one: Molly's Game, The Trial of the Chicago 7, and Being the Ricardos. Social reactions out of press screenings on October 5 mostly praised Strong and described a slow-burn legal drama. Our favorite came from someone who caught it early:

"Cinematically engineered for dads that watch movies while standing."

The Social Network opened to $22.4 million. Not one tracker has its follow-up opening above $13 million.

Kalshi traders are currently pricing a 69% Rotten Tomatoes score. That number gets tested on October 7.
