The star of Queen of Tears is back after 2 years — no romance this time: Kim Ji Won plays 'the mad dog of the operating room'
Two years ago, Kim Ji Won played a department-store heiress with a terminal diagnosis and a husband who was planning to leave her, and roughly half the planet cried on schedule every Saturday night.
She then did the thing great actresses do after a global hit, which is disappear. No drama in 2025. No follow-up rom-com. Just a long, deliberate silence.
The silence ends October 9. And she's not coming back to make anyone cry, unless it's the hospital board.
The show
Doctor X: Age of the White Mafia is SBS's remake of the long-running Japanese series Doctor-X, and it's the network's first swing at a medical drama in its recent run of glossy procedurals. It airs Fridays and Saturdays for 12 episodes and lands on Netflix worldwide the same day it airs in Korea.
The setup:
- Kim Ji Won is Gye Su-jeong, a freelance surgeon dispatched by a doctor-for-hire agency to fill a hole at Guseo University Hospital, an institution described in every press release as rotting from the inside.
- Her nickname is "the mad dog of the operating room." She is not there to make friends. She is there to operate, and to operate on the hospital itself, metaphorically, with a scalpel.
- Lee Jung-eun (yes, the housekeeper from Parasite) plays the agency boss who loves money and sends her in.
- Son Hyun-joo is the hospital director. Kim Woo-seok is the rich-kid intern whose life gets rearranged the moment she walks through the door.
The special teaser had her rejecting the white coat entirely and strolling into the building in black leather, then objecting to the first thing anyone said to her. The tone is "medical noir." The vibe is a woman who has read the hospital's org chart and found it funny.
Hong Hae-in was a woman who couldn't say what she felt. Gye Su-jeong is a woman who says exactly what she thinks, in surgery, with your ribs open. Growth.
Why the genre swap is the story
Kim Ji Won has done romance well for a decade, from Fight for My Way to Queen of Tears, and there was a version of her career where she just kept doing it, and it would have been fine, and it would have been a little sad.
Instead she went for the character whose entire arc is competence. No love interest in the marketing. No soft-focus rooftop. The premise is a talented woman entering a corrupt institution and refusing to be used by it, which is a K-drama archetype but not one she's been allowed to play before. The Japanese original ran for years on the strength of a surgeon who refused hierarchy on principle. If the remake gets even two-thirds of that energy, it's going to be a lot of fun.
There is also the small matter of the black coat. Costume departments do not put a woman in a black leather coat in a hospital by accident. That's a thesis statement.
The part that happened off-camera
In August, Seoul National University Children's Hospital announced that Kim Ji Won had donated 100 million won to cover treatment costs for children from low-income families and to renovate aging wards. Her explanation was that the decision came after "seeing medical staff working on the front lines" while filming the show.
Method actors take note: you can prepare for a role by, I don't know, funding a pediatric ward.
She spent months playing a surgeon who fights the system, then wrote a check to the actual system. That's not method. That's just having a point.
