2007, Amanda Knox, an American student, studies at the University of Perugia and lives with three other girls: British student Meredith Kercher and two Italians, Filomena and Laura.

On November 2, Amanda returns home after spending the night at her boyfriend Raffaele's. As soon as she crosses the threshold, she begins to notice strange things: blood stains on the bathroom floor, a broken window, and a locked door to Meredith's room.

Frightened, Amanda calls Raffaele, and the couple soon calls the police. The police break down the door and discover Meredith's body. Amanda immediately becomes a suspect.

Is 'The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox' Based on Real Events?

The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox is based on real events. True crime fans have likely already heard of Amanda Knox.

Her high-profile case was widely debated in the media, and the debate continues to this day. Netflix even released a documentary about her called Amanda Knox.

The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox is not the first work of fiction on this topic. Previous projects include Robert Dornhelm's 2011 TV movie The Amanda Knox Story and Michael Winterbottom's 2014 thriller The Face of an Angel, starring Kate Beckinsale.

The Kercher Family Was Not Involved in Creating 'The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox'

The important thing about The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox is that Meredith Kercher family was not involved in creating the project. The plot is based on Amanda Knox's book, Waiting to Be Heard: A Memoir, and Knox also produced the show.

From the first episode, the one-sided view of the situation is apparent: before us is Amanda's story, an attempt to share her version of events. The logical question is: how ethical is it to stir up an old case while leaving Meredith out of the equation?

On the one hand, the series' creators show respect – viewers do not see violent footage. On the other hand, however, we have no opportunity to learn about the murdered woman. Brief flashbacks do not reveal Meredith's personality or character.

What Did Critics & Viewers Think of 'The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox'?

  • The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox has 71% from critics and 62% from viewers on Rotten Tomatoes.

  • On IMDb, the series has a score of 5.7/10.
