The Ultimate Comfort Cake: This Cozy Orange Loaf With a Perfect Crinkle Top Is All You Need

If you’ve avoided everything that needs baking so far, this dessert may finally change your mind.

Making desserts at home might be considered a real therapy after a hard week, yet sometimes the mere thought of failing to bake something is what stops us from getting that delicious cake.

However, there are recipes that require a minimum of your baking skills, and this orange creamy cake is exactly like this. Preparing this dessert won’t take much of your time, plus there’s no need to stay in close contact with your oven — the cake will turn out perfect no matter what.

Ingredients:

For the dough: 10 g of sugar, 300 g of flour, 1 heaped teaspoon of baking powder, 90 g of butter, 1 egg.

For the filling: 700 g of oranges (with peel), 70 g of sugar, 8 g of vanilla sugar, 40 g of flour.

Mix the dry ingredients for the dough in a bowl (flour, sugar, and baking powder). Add a pinch of salt if you like. Add cold butter, cut into small pieces, to the dry mixture and rub everything together with your hands until it's crumbly. Then add a cold egg and rub again until you have a smooth, crumbly mixture.

Cover a baking tin (22–23 cm in diameter or 20×20 cm square) with baking paper and grease it with butter. Spread half of the dough into the tin and press down with a spoon.

Peel the oranges thoroughly, also removing the white pith, and chop into small cubes. Mix with sugar and vanilla sugar, adding a little bit of flour. Spread the filling over the layer of dough and smooth it out. Pour the second half of the dough on top and press down lightly.

Place the pie in a preheated oven and bake at 180 °C for 45 minutes until golden brown. It is normal if cracks appear on the surface.

Remove the pie from the pan while it is still warm and let it cool completely so that the filling thickens. Sprinkle with powdered sugar before serving.
