The Ultimate Comfort in a Bowl: Classic Swedish Meatballs with Silky Creamy Gravy
After this recipe, you won’t have to stop by your local IKEA just for those delicious meatballs they serve.
Not many countries across the world can boast of ultimate comfort food names on the list of their best dishes, but Sweden can certainly do so. With the country’s most famous brand IKEA taking the world by storm years ago and continuing to do the same now, some recipes of the Swedish cuisine have gone viral, including the not less famous meatballs.
In case you craved for those, but didn’t want to go to the store, here’s the recipe that might make you prepare meatballs every night from now on.
Ingredients: 300 g of ground beef, 200 g of ground pork, 1 potato (boiled and grated), 1 onion (finely chopped), 1 egg
2 tbsp of breadcrumbs, 100 ml of milk, 2 tbsp of butter, salt and pepper to taste, lingonberry jam for serving, mashed potatoes for a side dish.
For the sauce: 200 ml of heavy cream, 150 ml of beef broth , 1 tbsp of flour , 1 tbsp of butter, salt and pepper to your taste.
First, prepare the base for your meatballs. In a small bowl, soak the breadcrumbs in milk and let them rest for a bit.
Mix the meat mixture: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef and pork. Add the grated potatoes, chopped onion, egg, breadcrumbs, and milk. Mix thoroughly until smooth. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Shape the meatballs: form the mixture into small balls about the size of a walnut. Heat the butter in a skillet over medium heat and fry the meatballs until golden brown on each side. Move them to a paper towel to remove excess oil.
In a separate skillet, melt the butter, add the flour, and stir until there are no lumps. Gradually pour in the beef broth and cream, stirring constantly until the sauce thickens. Add salt and pepper to taste.
Place the meatballs in the sauce and simmer over low heat for a few minutes to let them absorb the flavors. Serve the meatballs with mashed potatoes and lingonberry jam.
