The Ultimate Tea-Time Treat: Rustic Italian Milk Cake With Sticky Caramel Glaze
You’ll spend only minutes making this authentic dessert — the rest is for the oven to do.
After having tried numerous exquisite desserts somewhere in bakeries or restaurants, you’ll likely crave for something home-made and simple, but also just as delicious as those top-tier sweet treats.
Well, the good news is that Italian cuisine can offer a recipe that perfectly fits this need: this apple pie with caramel glaze will conquer your entire family, making you prepare it every week from now on (trust us, it’s not that difficult at all).
Here’s what you need: 180 g of flour, 140 g of sugar, 120 ml of milk, 3 apples, 50 g of butter, 1 egg and 1 egg yolk, 1 tsp of baking powder, a pinch of salt, vanilla sugar (optional).
Melt the butter and let it cool slightly. Beat the egg, egg yolk, and sugar (reserving some for sprinkling) until light and fluffy, then pour in the milk and half of the butter. Add the flour, baking powder, and salt, and mix until you have a smooth, tender batter. Grease the pan with butter and pour in the dough. Slice the apples into thin pieces and arrange them tightly on top.
Then sprinkle the surface with a small amount of sugar and pour the remaining butter over it. It is during baking that the butter and sugar begin to caramelize, creating beautiful, appetizing drips along the edges of the pie.
Bake the pie for about 40–45 minutes at 180°C until golden brown. Let it cool slightly before serving; this will make the caramel on top even tastier, and the crumb will remain soft and fluffy.
