The Umbrella Academy Theory: Are Some Brellies Resistant to Others' Powers?
This could have been a huge game-changer in fact.
Even though the Umbrella Academy ended up consisting of just seven members, there were dozens of kids with superpowers that were born on the same day with the Hargreeves siblings. According to a Reddit theory, there is a possibility that some enhanced folks might enjoy a stronger immunity to others' powers than regular people.
"What I mean by this is that when one of The Umbrellas use their powers it is seemingly less effective on people who also have powers rather than people who do," Redditor Tomidnight said. "One leading example is the scene in Season 2 Episode 10, when Viktor uses a sound blast to kill thousands of commission men with one blow, but when Lila redirects the blast, it only knocks The Umbrellas a couple feet."
This is not the only example. For instance, when people are rumored by Allison, they don't remember it; this is why her husband in the 60s had to ask whether she ever used her power on him. However, when Luther is rumoured to "want her", he totally remembers what happened when Allison breaks off her spell.
When Lila mirrored Allison's rumouring power, Allison was able to "break out". Also, when she tried to rumour Sloane in season 3, the latter managed to resist — while other people immediately fall under the spell.
Other fans came up with even more examples.
"Another thing I'll mention is Klaus seeing Ben's ghost even when he's drugged/intoxicated. This suggests to me that Ben being Klaus's sibling is more tuned into his power and therefore able to manifest even when Klaus is successfully suppressing all other ghosts through drugs," Redditor sulky22 said.
However, it might also be up to the superpowered people's intentions and skill, not some sort of a natural immunity to other's powers.
The possibility has never been directly raised in the show, but there is a chance that season 4 will address it.
The fourth chapter will become the final one for The Umbrella Academy, as confirmed by Netflix in summer. The premiere date, as well as plot details, is yet to be revealed, but we can expect all seven Brellies to reunite on screen one more time.
