The 'Vikings' Universe Expands: 'Bloodaxe' Series Coming from Amazon — And Here’s Who’s Starring

Michael Hirst’s epic saga about the king of Norway gets a face — and surprisingly, it’s not a star, but a newcomer.
Amazon Prime Video has officially announced the lead actor for the historical drama Bloodaxe — and it’s not someone like Cillian Murphy, but a little-known actor, Xavier Molineux. He will play Erik I, nicknamed Blood Axe — a fierce Viking who became king of Norway, not without betrayal, treachery, and epic battles.
Previously, Molino appeared in the melodrama Take My Hand, and now he takes center stage in one of the most anticipated premieres from the creator of Vikings.
Set Between Vikings and Valhalla
Although the series will not be a direct continuation of the franchise, it will unfold in familiar territory — between the events of the cult series Vikings (2013–2020) and its spinoff Vikings: Valhalla (2022–2024). At the center are Erik and his wife Gunnhild, also known as the Mother of Kings. Their path to the throne leads through chaos, rivalry, and wars that span all of Scandinavia — and even reach England.
Written by the Hirst Father-Son Duo
Vikings creator Michael Hirst is writing the script in collaboration with his son, Horatio Hirst, who has already worked on Valhalla. Both are producing the show and are also developing another project — a series based on a novel about Pompeii. The Hirst style and their attention to detail are a guarantee that Bloodaxe will be a solid historical drama full of atmosphere and tension.
No release date has been announced yet, but with such an established universe, fan expectations are already running high.
