The actress exited the superhero franchise for a reason many might not believe is real.

The overwhelming success of The White Lotus ’ ongoing third season has become a new milestone for many of its actors’ career, including for HBO’s big star Carrie Coon.

Long before landing one of the leading roles in Mike White’s feverish black comedy, the actress had a breakthrough moment thanks to the studio’s supernatural hit drama The Leftovers; more recently, she could also be seen in Netflix ’s heart-wrenching movie His Three Daughters.

However, even with wider recognition still waiting for a moment to arrive, Coon has so far had plenty of notable roles both on TV and in cinema, having even appeared in one of Marvel’s highest-grossing movies ever.

With a handful of brilliant performances in hit dramas under her belt, the actress also had a brief entrance in Marvel’s superhero franchise, starring as Thanos’ henchman Proxima Midnight in 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War.

The movie, boasting a star-studded ensemble that included Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlet Johansson, Benedict Cumberbatch and others, had an astounding success in the box office, becoming Marvel’s fourth movie to reach the $2 billion mark.

However, it was the film’s financial triumph that somehow quickly turned into a major reason for Carrie Coon to quit the franchise, despite her initial plan to return to the role in Marvel’s next big hit, Avengers: Endgame.

Carrie Coon Had Salary Issue With Marvel

Even though the superhero studio made quite a profit after Avengers: Infinity War premiered, it declined Coon’s suggestion about her salary raise, according to the actress’ husband and playwright Tracy Letts.

Delving into the matter during a talk on The Big Picture podcast, Letts revealed Marvel had reached out to Coon, asking her to reprise the role in Avengers: Endgame, though the negotiation was quickly shut down due to the money issue.

“And she said, ‘Well, the first one is the most successful movie ever made. Are you going to pay me any more money?’ And they said, ‘No. We’re not going to pay you any more money’”, he stated.

The actor then added that the studio had tried to make Coon feel bad for declining the offer, suggesting she should have considered herself lucky for having a chance to collaborate on one of the most successful movies in history.

However, for the actress this wasn’t the case after all.

“We would’ve made a bigger deal out of this, but it would have involved us watching the movies and we weren’t going to do that”, Letts joked later.
