What is this new Supernatural universe?

Warning: the following article contains spoilers for The Winchesters pilot episode

The Winchesters has blessed Supernatural fans with the opportunity to return into the good old world of monster-hunting and even be guided by the familiar and beloved character — Dean Winchester, portrayed by Jensen Ackles who is also an executive producer of the show.

The prequel follows the story of John and Mary Winchester, the parents of the Winchester brothers, but it is only Dean who is on a mission to discover the truth about his family. Before the premiere of The Winchesters, fans kept wondering why Sam was not the part of Dean's investigation, with even Jared Padalecki being apparently triggered over lack of his involvement into the show.

A subtle yet touching Easter egg in the pilot episode has fueled speculations that everyone was too quick to exclude Sam's figure from the show. When Dean returns into his Impala, he stares at something very familiar — an amulet that every Supernatural fan knows as "Samulet".

"That's what I'm trying to figure out. To me it sounded like he was writing to Sam, and the way he looked at the (faux) Samulet, and the empty passenger seat reinforced that impression. But when were they separated (and still themselves) in Season 10 or later?" Twitter fan julesnewdaddy wondered.

Some fans believe that the Samulet is clearly a hint indicating that something is coming.

"The samulet isn't in the impala in 15x20, and I cannot stop thinking about why it's here now and Dean looks at it so prominently. It's serving a purpose, I just don't know what it is yet!" Twitter user Lyconite argued.

It has been teased earlier that The Winchesters will feature a lot of familiar faces from Supernatural, but the way the very first episode appears to be hinting at the comeback of two main characters — Sam Winchester and Castiel — certainly has fans buzzing in excitement for more episodes to come.

The Winchesters is airing on The CW every Tuesday. The number of episodes in the first season is yet to be clarified.
