‘The Witcher’ Season 4 Called the Next ‘Game of Thrones’ — and Not in a Good Way
Netflix’s fantasy hit has just returned with a new season, causing even more backlash for Henry Cavill’s recasting and book differences — but The Witcher’s final instalment might still please the fans.
It’s hardly been a couple of days since Netflix’s The Witcher came back with its scandalous season 4, but the show is already setting its anti-records straight.
Things were going pretty well until 2023 when The Witcher’s then lead Henry Cavill announced his departure from the series, igniting rumours about creative differences with The Witcher’s showrunners and behind-the scenes drama.
He was then replaced by The Hunger Games’ star Liam Hemsworth who debuted as Geralt in the recently released fourth season.
It’s fair to say all the major changes haven’t been met with enthusiasm by the show’s fans, though The Witcher’s creator promises (at least) the show will never dare repeat Game of Thrones’ biggest mistake.
‘The Witcher’ Final Season Will Strictly Follow the OG Book — Unlike ‘Game of Thrones’

Though things are a bit different with HBO’s epic drama — there was and still is no book that Game of Thrones’ season 8 covered — The Witcher is getting lots of comparisons to George Martin’s scandalous TV series, mostly because of all the inconsistencies and differences that Netflix made to the story.
Now that The Witcher’s season 4 is already out and final season 5 has just wrapped filming, fans are concerned whether the show’s ending will choose its own path just like Game of Thrones did back in the day.
However, The Witcher’s showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich was quick to make sure the team is doing justice to Andrzej Sapkowski’s books.
“I think that we lucked out because I said very early on, ‘We’re not going to go past the books’. We lean so hardcore into fantasy at the end in wonderful ways that Sapkowski introduced us to. So we knew the stories that we needed to end with”, Hissrich said in an interview with Dexerto recently.
‘The Witcher’ Season 4 Is Now the Lowest-Rated Instalment in the Show’s History

Despite Liam Hemsworth getting some praise from The Witcher’s fans, the actor’s new portrayal of Geralt didn’t quite help the series elevate itself.
On Rotten Tomatoes, the new season’s scores are just as low as 56% and 18% from critics and audiences respectively, who crashed the new instalment for all the mess that The Witcher continues to be even with a new lead.
“Perhaps it’s fitting that we only have to toss a coin to our witcher once more after this”, RogerEbert.com’s Clint Worthington wrote.
“The show ended with the third season. Changing Henry was the worst decision. No disrespect to Liam, but Henry was what made the show, even if the writers had already moved far from the books. It just doesn’t feel the same”, user Luke T complained on Rotten Tomatoes’ website.
The Witcher’s season 4 is now streaming on Netflix.
