Viewers expected to see Daeron Targaryen in Season 2, but he only appeared in one scene with his dragon – here's why we didn't see him in the second season and what to expect from him in Season 3.

House of the Dragon Season 3 doesn't even have a release date yet, but fans are already speculating about which new character they're most looking forward to seeing in the upcoming season.

Fans Are Looking Forward to Finally Meeting Daeron Targaryen

And most viewers agree on one answer – Daeron Targaryen. So far, we've only heard other characters talk about him – Otto Hightower confirmed that he was a ward in Oldtown, and Gwayne Hightower described him as kind and clever.

“I want to see Daeron Targaryen - would his long time away have bred resentment, or is he in fact the most well adjusted out of all the siblings and would in fact be horrified by the state of his family?”

Regardless of how Daeron treats his family, one thing is certain – he and his dragon Tessarion will be fighting for the Greens in the coming war. We saw Daeron on his dragon at the very end of the final episode of Season 2.

Why Wasn't Daeron in Seasons 1&2 of House of the Dragon?

George Martin admitted in his Not a Blog post that in a plot with so many characters, there simply wasn't time to reveal another Targaryen:

“Alicent gave Viserys four children, three sons and a daughter, their youngest son Daeron is down in Oldtown, we just did not have the time to work him in this season.”

House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal explained that Daeron is part of the show's canon, but “we're just not there yet in the storytelling”.

The following text contains spoilers for George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood and House of the Dragon Season 3!

Daeron's Fate in George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood

At the age of six, Daeron was given a female dragon, Tessarion. At the age of twelve, he became cupbearer and squire to Lord Ormund Hightower.

When King Viserys died, Daeron was in Oldtown and therefore did not participate in the Dance of the Dragons during the early days of the war. During the Battle on the Honeywine, Daeron was instrumental in the Greens victory, and Ormund Hightower knighted him and named him Daeron the Daring.

Daeron fought for the Greens throughout the Dance of the Dragons and died during the Second Battle of Tumbleton. Daeron slept in his tent and, according to one version, burned to death in it.

Prince Daeron's death was considered a mystery, and his body was never found. Later, during the reign of Aegon III, several other "princes" claimed to be him, but they were all eventually exposed as impostors.
