Jensen Ackles' Dean Winchester is back as one of the stars and executive producers of The CW's Supernatural prequel, The Winchesters.

Fans were euphoric when they realised that his character would return in The Winchesters, which will tell the story of his and Sam's parents, John and Mary Winchester.

Dean only appeared on screen once – in the very first episode of the prequel, where he looked through some documents and started his iconic Impala, adding that he would "keep picking the music". Since then, viewers have only heard his voice... and that's where things start to get weird.

According to a fan on Reddit, it's pretty bizarre that Jensen isn't using his so-called "Dean voice", with the actor telling the story in his regular Texas accent.

The Winchesters' Biggest Problem is Its Unlikable Characters, not Retconning Canon

The infamous "Dean voice" sounds deeper than the way Jensen usually speaks at fan conventions or in interviews. However, The Winchesters seems to be moving away from the iconic voice.

As this is not the only inconsistency in the show; fans are beginning to suspect that The Winchesters will indeed play the multiverse card to explain this and many other changes the prequel has made to the original show.

For example, it seems to retcon the original story of John and Mary Winchester, in which John only took up the hunt after his wife died at the hands of a demon called Azazel. In The Winchesters, however, it is Mary who introduces John to the world of hunting – something many fans still can't get their heads around.

However, Ackles has also insisted that the prequel will remain faithful to the Supernatural canon. So clearly something is wrong with the way the Winchesters' story is developing – and Jensen not using the iconic "Dean voice" could be one of the clues.

However, we will have to keep watching the show to find out the real answer. There will be 13 episodes in the first season of The Winchesters, with The CW for some reason reluctant to order an extended season.

New episodes will be released every Tuesday.
