It’s not all about talent, or the lack thereof.

Summary:

  • Grey's Anatomy is a hit ABC medical drama series that has been on the air since 2004.
  • The musical episode Song Beneath the Song is considered by many to be the worst musical episode on television.
  • Fans believe that much of the fault lies not in the performances, but in the sound post-production.

There is nothing more controversial than musicals making their way into TV shows. While some viewers find them charming and enjoy the songs that are somehow intertwined with the main plot of the episode when it's done well, others despise it as a concept and are critical of the very idea.

What's probably true for the vast majority of TV viewers, regardless of how they feel about musical episodes in general, is that they hated the Grey's Anatomy musical episode with a passion. And for many years, people just couldn't put their finger on what exactly made the episode so cringe-worthy.

All versions, from the actors' voices to the writers' inability to make the songs seem at least a little bit more organic, are somewhat valid. However, some details are not so easy to notice if you don't want to put yourself through this ordeal of an episode again and can't bring yourself to pay attention to the production.

Why Is Grey's Anatomy Musical Episode So Bad?

While some people think the problem is the way the episodes are written between the songs, others think the songs themselves are to blame. It's not that they're bad. In fact, many people admit to saving them just to listen to them again outside of the show, admiring the lyrics, the music, and the voices of the actors.

The problem arose during the post-production of the episode. Normally, Grey's Anatomy sound production is very well done, with no unwanted noises of volume jumps all over the place. However, the sound designers didn't seem prepared to work on a musical episode, as they didn't manage to control the volume quite as well.

It was Redditor tata_barbbati who first pointed out the differences, and other fans of the show confirmed it a little later:

“The songs seem so out of place: the volume. When Lexie is singing to crying Mark, the volume of her voice is so different to his that it doesn’t seem like the same scene. And when Hunt starts <...> the volume is so quiet compared to what the others had when discussing in that scene that I had to check twice to see if my audio didn’t fail.”

Luckily, after such a big failure with the reception of the episode, Grey's Anatomy will probably never try another episode like this again. But if they ever do, this detail could make or break it!

If you are feeling nostalgic, or if you happen to be one of about three people who enjoyed this episode, you can watch it again by streaming Grey's Anatomy on Hulu or Netflix.
