The show was heavily inspired by Taylor Sheridan’s Western hit and sounded like a longstanding deal for the streamer.

Taylor Sheridan might be able to surpass himself, but there’s probably no one able to surpass Taylor Sheridan after all.

The writer-director’s monumental Western show Yellowstone was launched back in 2018 and since then became a true cultural phenomenon, serving as the primary source of inspiration for other fans of the genre in the TV industry.

However, not all of them, aiming at the same level of success, managed to do so, and one of Netflix ’s latest Western hits is a disheartening proof of it. Released in October of 2024, the series came as a perfect replacement for Sheridan’s now-gone Yellowstone, but recently had a very unexpected twist in its potential TV future.

Netflix Cancels Territory After Just 1 Season

Expecting the show to get a renewal for a second season at any moment, Territory’s fans were caught off guard when Australian outlets reported that the series was officially scrapped by Netflix and now wouldn’t return to the screens.

At some point, it was in fact believed that Territory would definitely get its second season since it garnered positive reviews from critics and the audiences, but still didn’t stay in Netflix’s top 10 as long as expected, which had the streamer thinking whether it was worth the shot after all.

Additionally, “logistics around timing” is considered one of the possible reasons for the ultimate cancellation.

“We are incredibly thankful to have had the chance to work with the wonderful cast and production team to bring Territory and the stunning Australian outback into the homes of millions around the world. Although we won’t be continuing with another season, we eagerly anticipate working with all of them again in the future”, Netflix’s director of content for Australia and New Zealand, Que Min Luu, said in a statement.

Territory Is Yellowstone’s Australian Version

Consisting of only 6 episodes, Territory’s first and final season had its events unfolding at Marianne Station, the world’s largest cattle station owned by the Lawson family dynasty for generations.

The land is a titbit for many others, including several more wealthy cattle station families, gangsters, tycoons and Australian Aboriginal elders, and the Lawsons have to constantly keep an eye on their property.

However, things change radically when patriarch Colin Lawson's favored son Daniel dies in a very suspicious incident, urging the entire family to confront its rivals with even more fierceness.
