There’s Another Oscars Scandal Emerging 2 Weeks After the Ceremony

Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance took home one award, though the triumph soon turned into an even more anger-fuelled conflict.
Roughly two weeks ago when the Oscars ceremony took place, many were outraged to see the Demi Moore- led body-horror The Substance winning only one statuette out of the movie’s 5 nominations, but the deserved award soon turned into a bone of contention for the film’s production team.
That said, The Substance’s makeup and hairstyling department was thrown into utter chaos when its Oscar-winning member was accused of stealing the statuette from another and allegedly more nomination-deserving colleague that worked on the movie’s set.
The scandal reached new heights with the accused winner’s claims that her career has been constantly threatened by her co-worker’s evil intentions for years now.
Frédérique Arguello Repeatedly Slammed Her Oscar-Winning Colleagues and the Academy for a Snub at the Ceremony
The hair department head on The Substance’s set, Arguello was initially left out of the movie’s nomination for Best Makeup and Hairstyling and didn’t even get a single mention of her work from those who were receiving the award onstage that night, specifically from assistant hair stylist Marilyne Scarselli, special makeup effects designer Pierre Olivier Persin and key makeup artist Stephanie Guillon.
Previously, Arguello also made an attempt to criticise the Academy for her exclusion from the nomination, saying that she had been unfairly robbed in favor of Scarselli who was her assistant and allegedly put much less effort into the film than Arguello did.
Scarselli then denied the allegations, stating that she was deservingly nominated due to her side-by-side work with The Substance’s leading actress Demi Moore. Additionally, she made a bombshell revelation about her relationship with Arguello, claiming that the latter had already made attempts to bring her career down.
“She tried to destroy my career in Paris and all the hair stylists in Paris killed me on Facebook and social media. It’s really bad for me and for my career”, she stated back then.
The Substance Producer Spoke Out in Defence of Marilyne Scarselli During a “Lynching” Campaign
With all the twists and turns that the newly emerged scandal is taking right now, The Substance’s producer Nicolas Royer had to intervene, publishing a letter which publicly condemns “the lynching” of Scarselli.
“Frédérique Arguello and Marilyne Scarselli both held the position of Head Hairdresser on the film TheSubstance. Frédérique intervened more in preparation for the search for looks and during part of the shooting. Marilyne took care of the main actresses more, in conjunction with the Special Makeup Effects team”, Royer stated.
He then also added that both Arguello and Scarselli deserved to be included in the nomination and there was no one else to blame in the issue but the Academy which, in its turn, also has strict limits of only 3 nominees that can receive the award.
