The actress has once again conquered Hollywood with her role in The Substance, and now she can have a triumphant win, just like Brendan Fraser did back in 2023.

Tension is high ahead of the upcoming Oscars ceremony, and other major awards ceremonies so far have been unable to come to unanimity.

Things are especially complicated with the Best Actress category where, apart from other three nominees, The Substance’s Demi Moore and Anora’s Mikey Madison are the ones to compete for the award.

The former has so far received a bunch of statuettes in the category, including the Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice Award, while the latter’s sudden BAFTA win brought Madison even more upfront, making her and Moore’s chances for the Oscar almost equal.

However, The Substance is still a slightly more likely bet in the category, and there’s one more reason for that.

Coralie Fargeat’s body-horror The Substance came as a true blessing for Moore whose career has been suffering from decades-long stagnation.

The actress’ latest notable leading role was in one of her movies from the 1990s, and after that Moore’s newer projects were mostly a series of critical or commercial failures. This, accompanied by harsh criticism, made Moore believe that she wasn’t worthy of awards-deserving acting roles in commercially successful movies.

“Thirty years ago I had a producer tell me I was a popcorn actress and at that time I made that mean that I wasn’t allowed to have this, that I could do movies that were successful and made a lot of money but that I wouldn’t be acknowledged and I bought in and I believed that,” the actress said while accepting the Golden Globe for Best Actress in January, her first ever major acting award.

Moore’s Comeback Story Is What The Academy Enjoyed Rewarding in Recent Years

If the actress does take the award for Best Actress on March 2, she will in fact join the Academy’s encouraging trend of making up to the actors who have been unfairly forgotten at some point.

The latest example is Brendan Fraser who in 2023 won an Oscar for Best Actor for the role in Darren Aronofsky’s psychological drama The Whale; just like Demi Moore, the actor was stuck with mostly ignored roles and critically panned movies until The Whale came along.

The same concerns actors like Matthew McConaughey and Mickey Rourke who had their breakout roles after decades spent in the movies without any real recognition.

Demi Moore’s possible win at the Oscars will become a big moment for both the actress and the entire cinema industry; however, Mikey Madison taking the award isn’t a bad option either.
