There’s Some Bad News About ‘Lilo & Stitch’s Disney+ Release

Disney’s new hit live-action remake has spent several weeks in theatres for now, but it’s unlikely that the movie will hit the streaming soon — here’s everything we know so far.
Disney’s new pride and joy, Lilo & Stitch is now making up for the mouse house’s financial losses after Snow White’s release back in March.
The 2002 cult classics’ remake has so far grossed more than $770 million around the world and will likely have the same popularity on streaming platforms.
However, it might take a while before Lilo & Stitch lands on Disney+, considering a pretty disheartening trend that all the recent Disney films seemingly followed.
‘Lilo & Stitch’ Digital Release Might Not Be Happening Anytime Soon
The movie, released in the United Stated on May 23, is yet to spend several weeks more in theatres, with Disney potentially prolonging this stay for as much as possible due to Lilo & Stitch’s extremely successful run for three consecutive weeks.
Unlike many other companies that push their movies right onto streaming platforms a month after their theatrical release, Disney usually takes things way more slowly, with the studio’s films arriving on Disney+’s platform some 100 days after their premiere in cinemas.
This is a bit different with Disney’s previous remake Snow White that hit theatres on March 21 and is now set to stream on Disney+ on June 11, which marks 82 days since the movie’s premiere; for The Lion King, however, it took 97 days to reach the digital platform.
Anyway, it’s not yet clear when exactly Lilo & Stitch will be available on Disney+, but fans better expect it to get a digital release sometime in mid-August.
What Critics and Viewers Say About New ‘Lilo & Stitch’
- On Rotten Tomatoes, Lilo & Stitch has scores of 72% and 93% from critics and viewers
- On IMDb, the movie is rated 7/10
Even though some still slammed the new remake for simplifying the original movie’s story and idea, both critics and audience members mostly had nothing that bad to say about Lilo & Stitch’s renewed version.
“The live-action version adds a few more layers to the lovable plotline – fleshing out both the narrative and characters to add depth to the story and excising a few details to keep the structure fairly tight”, Globe and Mail’s Aparita Bhandari wrote.
“Here, “ohana” doesn’t just mean family but community, and the film does moving and spirited work in showcasing how crucial it is for us to lift each other up”, Slant Magazine’s Justin Clark added.
“I love that while this honors the original story, it is not an exact copy scene for scene of the animated original. It has many new scenes that help tell the same story and feels beloved, fresh, and surprising all at the same time. One of the best love action versions Disney has done!” user Emilyraincoat also commented on Rotten Tomatoes’ website.
Lilo & Stitch is currently playing in theatres worldwide.
