There’s Some Oscar-Promising News For ‘Wicked: For Good’
The upcoming sequel for Ariana Grande and Synthia Erivo’s 2024 hit musical has just received its first reviews, and they might defy the gravity at the Oscars ceremony.
The Oscars buzz is starting to be heard at last now that this year’s most anticipated and promising movies keep arriving in theatres worldwide, and another big contender’s chances for a couple of statuettes have just been confirmed.
Coming as a sequel for 2024’s Wicked, Wicked: For Good sees Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo reprising their roles as Glinda and Elphaba respectively, the two witches whose friendship is cracked by The Wizard.
The movie is now set to dive deeper into all the drama that distanced the protagonists and eventually set them against each other, also concluding the entire story based on the Broadway musical of the same name.
Though there’s still several weeks left until Wicked’s fans will get to see the movie with their own eyes, the first reviews for Wicked: For Good are already in, seemingly indicating the upcoming flick’s greater chances for getting that Oscar after all.
‘Wicked: For Good’ Is Hailed "Sheer Musical Greatness" by Critics
The official promo campaign for Jon M. Chu’s sequel is yet to start in the upcoming weeks, but it seems like the best promo has already been launched.
After the first couple of screenings held exclusively for movie critics and journalists, Wicked: For Good is officially one of the best movies released this year, with many highlighting that the sequel exceeds all the expectations and even goes way beyond everything the first film did last year.
“Cynthia Erivo is magnificent, but get ready for Ariana Grande as she takes this performance to the next level and is a tour de force. And wow, the world building, the costumes, and Alice Brooks’ cinematography deserve your attention. Cannot wait to see it again. I sobbed hard. Wicked: For Good is sheer musical greatness”, Variety’s Jazz Tangcay shared on X.
“All Good Deeds Go Rewarded in Wicked: For Good. It’s an epic and heartbreakingly tender conclusion to one of the most dynamic friendships in pop culture history. There’s a lot for fans of the Broadway show to love with butterfly kiss sized surprises in store”, Deadline’s Destiny Jackson revealed.
“Saw wicked for good last month and believe me when i say that it expands and deepens the original source material in generally exciting and innovative ways. Cynthia and Ari take their performances to the next level with jaw dropping performances. The film fully sticks the landing”, Vanity Fair’s staff writer Chris Murphy added.
‘Wicked: For Good’ Might Make History at the Upcoming Oscars
Considering that there’s a lot of talking about Synthia Erivo and Ariana Grande’s performances in the movie, it’s fair to say both actresses will likely compete for the Best Actress award at different ceremonies, just like they did last year.
This time, however, things might be slightly different — and much better for either of them: should Wicked: For Good’s leads be nominated in the Best Actress category at the Oscars, they will make a history by becoming two of few actors who received Oscar nods twice for the same role.
Wicked: For Good is now set to premiere in theatres worldwide on November 21.
