Sci-fi is an interesting and very promising premise, but also one that's pretty hard to pull off, that's why a lot of sci-fi movies and TV shows don't see a continuation. The reasons for that are different, but that doesn't curb our curiosity.

Despite our technological advances, sci-fi shows still require huge budgets to accurately portray whatever kind of world the showrunners have conceived.

They're some of the most stuffed with VFX compared to general action or slice-of-life works because sci-fi worlds usually tend to look quite different from the one in which we currently reside.

The other reason for cancellation, aside from budget, is that sci-fi shows need more time to establish the lore and lure the viewers in, and that may lead to lower initial ratings. When the seasons were longer, not 10 or 12 but 22 episodes, it was much easier to do that: the showrunners had enough time to properly describe the laws of the universe they wanted to portray, make it interesting, and offer not only questions about it but also answers.

And while some sci-fi shows were canceled mid-season, like Firefly, it's not common practice, and maybe longer seasons can save the genre.
