There’s nothing better than a big star-led brain-scratching story on a wintery evening.
With their myriads of entangled details that at some point should turn into a pretty logically assembled puzzle, psychological thrillers sometimes are a quite complicated thing to grasp at the first watch.
However, they’re still one of the most compelling genres proving human ability to explore its own nature on a more profound level, also making it a practical tool for uncovering mysteries that have been long considered untouchable.
Pretty well aware of all that, Netflix has a bunch of such movies that remained the platform’s hidden gems for years, and, with all new movies alike already seen, they might join other flicks on your watchlist now.
Leave the World Behind (2023)
Based on Rumaan Alam’s 2020 novel of the same name, Leave the World Behind is a star-packed apocalyptic thriller that sees characters portrayed by Julia Roberts, Mahershala Ali and Ethan Hawke trying to keep things together as they observe a potential cataclysm approaching.
When paranoia and overall tension start ruling over, two families lose all trust for each other and let survival instincts guide them through the mess.
Released on Netflix in December of last year, Leave the World Behind has remained a hidden gem ever since, though the audiences might want to give it a watch, intrigued by phenomenal performances from star-studded cast and the movie’s good critical score which is currently 74% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The Killer (2023)
This action-packed thriller with Michael Fassbender as its lead has also spent quite some time hiding from big audiences, toppled down by other long-awaited and big releases.
Directed by legendary David Fincher, the movie stars Fassbender as a professional hitman, known only as The Killer, who embarks on an international vendetta after one of his missions doesn’t go according to plan.
Having premiered at the Venice International Film Festival back in 2023, The Killer opened to positive reviews from critics and audiences, currently holding 85% and 61% respectively on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie arrived on Netflix in November of 2023 and isn’t going anywhere from there anytime soon.
Fractured (2019)
A thriller that will leave you on the hook till the very end, putting all cards on the table one by one, Fractured follows Sam Worthington’s Ray Monroe whose wife and daughter vanish from the emergency room in a hospital.
Still suffering from a head injury, Ray realises that his mind is being tricked and the injury makes some crazy twists in his perception of reality; seized by paranoid thoughts, he starts wondering whether it’s the hospital that tries to hide the truth from him or rather his own mind that keeps deluding him.
Despite receiving mixed reviews upon its release, Fractured is one of the best movies of the genre kept on Netflix, though it might have been unfairly forgotten.
The Frozen Ground (2013)
Scott Walker ’s directorial debut, The Frozen Ground is another star-packed action thriller that has Nicolas Cage as its lead, so there’s at least one reason to bring it back to light after a long time spent without much attention from Netflix’s users.
Based on real-life events, the film follows Cage’s state trooper Jack Halcombe who embarks on an investigation when the horrifying truth about a serial killer hunting women for years is unveiled.
The case receives a crucial break point when a teenage escapee joins her forces to help track down the killer, and Halcombe now has no other choice but to race against time before the criminal gets to another victim.
