Love is overrated anyway.

Valentine’s Day has long been the best day of the year for a myriad of movies whose stories are nothing but a fight for true love that ends with happily ever after.

A viewer might have already gotten used to it, but at some point the reality check has to come in, showing that life isn’t just about happy endings and, what’s even worse, your partner might even break you entirely and forever.

Among all the films centring on perfect or not so perfect couples, only a few can be trusted due to their realistic perspective delivered without any attempt to sugarcoat romantic issues. Luckily, many of them are also recognised hits that deserve another rewatch even on Valentine’s Day.

Gone Girl (2014)

For someone going through a breakup or just staying away from all possible problems that relationships can cause, there’s nothing more satisfying than “For Valentine’s Day I thought I’d buy a gun” cited in Rosamund Pike’s deep voice.

Based on the 2012 novel of the same name, Gone Girl is a creepy story that follows Ben Affleck ’s Nick Dunne coming back home on his 5th wedding anniversary to realise that his beloved wife Amy has vanished.

Desperate to find out what happened, Nick starts cooperating with the police, but soon becomes the primary suspect as controversial details about his and Amy’s life resurface.

Gerald’s Game (2017)

A movie that proves romantic getaways to be quite dangerous too. Based on Stephen King ’s novel of the same name and directed by Mike Flanagan, Gerald’s Game keeps terrifying viewers years after its release on Netflix.

Revolving around married couple Jessie and Gerald Burlingame, the storyline follows them to an isolated lake house where the characters decide to spend a weekend trying to resolve their numerous marital issues.

The romantic getaway soon turns into Jessie’s worst nightmare when Gerald suddenly dies of a heart attack and she, handcuffed to the bed, must come up with a plan to survive.

The Tinder Swindler (2022)

One of the most viral documentary movies in recent years, The Tinder Swindler was a massive hit on Netflix and to this day remains one of the most watched projects ever released on the platform.

The film recounts the story of Israeli conman Simon Leviev who, using Tinder as his primary method to connect with several individuals, masterfully manipulated them into sending him money to support his posh lifestyle, justifying it by a presence of some “enemies” who he needs to run away from.

Marriage Story (2019)

Directed by Noah Baumbach, Marriage Story is a perfect depiction of a couple going through a severe relationship crisis that leaves both no other choice but to part their ways.

The story catches Adam Driver ’s Charlie Barber and Scarlett Johansson ’s Nicole right at the time when their marriage starts cracking, with things getting even worse once Nicole lands a starring role in a series based on Los Angeles and plans to move there with her and Charlie’s young son Henry.

Despite the couple’s intention to separate amicably, the divorce process gets messier, resulting in both Charlie and Nicole finally learning the truth about their feelings for each other.

Revolutionary Road (2008)

Starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, Revolutionary Road would be a perfect and very life-like follow-up to the actors’ previous movie Titanic if Jack did survive in the end.

The movie is based on Richard Yates’ book of the same name and follows Frank and April Wheeler, a typical suburban couple with two kids and life they actually wanted to be very different.

As Frank mostly spends his time at the work he hates and April, a 1950s housewife, feels trapped by suburban tranquility and boredom, the couple decides to give their dream another chance, but it becomes an even more challenging plan when April finds out that she’s pregnant again.
