This 20%-Rated Romance Flick Just Became Prime Video's Most-Watched International Film Ever
This is not the kind of project you would expect to see at the very top of the platform.
The finale of the After franchise, one of the most notable teen movies of recent years, opened up a space in the genre that, as we know, does not remain empty for too long.
The secret to the success of YA adaptations is simple: behind each one there is a huge and loyal audience of readers who spread the word about the new romantic project and ensure high viewing figures.
Your Fault Is the Most Popular International Movie on Amazon Prime Video
In 2023, Prime Video made a multi-year commitment to produce adaptations of Mercedes Ron's series of novels. The first film, My Fault, or Culpa mía, was a success – the adaptation stayed at the top of the platform for a long time and apparently met the creators' expectations.
In 2024, we received the second adaptation, Your Fault, or Culpa tuya, and the creators of the project themselves probably did not expect such stunning ratings this time.
Your Fault has set a new Prime Video record – it is now the most-watched international original project in the platform's history, according to Deadline.
However, Your Fault failed to win over audiences and critics alike, with a Rotten Tomatoes score of just 20% and 44% respectively.
What Was My Fault About?
In the first film, 17-year-old Noah moves to a coastal town with her mother, who has married a wealthy businessman.
Her half-brother, 22-year-old Nick, initially infuriates the girl. But a spark inevitably ignites between them.
The Plot of Your Fault Takes Place One Year After My Fault
The action of Your Fault takes place one year after the first movie. Noah has graduated from high school and is celebrating her 18th birthday. The girl has started college and plans to move from a luxurious mansion to a dormitory.
Nick works in another city, but he cannot miss the birthday of his beloved. His appearance is a complete surprise for Noah – the two have not seen each other all this time.
At the same time, Nick's ex-girlfriend shows up at Noah's college, obviously hiding something. Nick's mother, who left him many years ago, also returns to town. Family secrets again prevent the lovers from finding happiness.
My Fault and Your Fault Are Excessive in Their Passions and Betrayals
The director and screenwriter of My Fault and Your Fault, Domingo González, makes the most common mistake of a debutant – he puts all the eggs in one basket and fills the movies with passion any soap opera would only dream of (we'll get back to that).
There are so many events happening in Your Fault that your head is spinning and the screen is about to burst from the level of passion. Every minute on screen, intrigues are being woven, scandals are flaring up, and betrayals are being committed.
My Fault and Your Fault Are Reminiscent of Good Old Soap Operas
Like we said, both films have the vibe of the soap operas that were popular on TV in the 2000s. It is surprising that such plots are still relevant: apparently, a new target audience is growing up.
People en masse need intense romantic experiences that are lacking in real life. So if you've seen My Fault and Your Fault and are waiting for Our Fault (Culpa Nuestra), don't be ashamed – it's a justifiable guilty pleasure.
