This 28%-Rated Flick Is Officially the Most Expensive Movie in History – It Grossed More Than $1B
The previous record holder was Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which had a budget of $638.9 million.
In the world of cinema, some movies become legends thanks to their plot, acting, or direction. Others make history solely due to the size of their budget.
Jurassic World Dominion is precisely such a case. According to financial documents filed in the UK, Universal Pictures spent $658.8 million producing it, making it the most expensive film in cinematic history.
'Jurassic World Dominion' Is Now Officially the Most Expensive Movie in History

Jurassic World Dominion is the most expensive film of all time. It broke budget records and surpassed even Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The primary reason for these costs was the ongoing pandemic.
Filming took place in 2020 when the studio had to adhere to strict health and safety measures and repeatedly postpone production. The company continued to pay for soundstage rentals, equipment, set security, and key personnel, even during forced downtime.
Additional expenses were incurred due to the cast's extended quarantine. The movie's stars, including Bryce Dallas Howard, Chris Pratt, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum, stayed at the luxurious Langley Hotel near Pinewood Studios in the UK for approximately five months.
The final cost was determined by the UK tax rebate system, which requires studios to create separate companies for each film and publish their financial statements.
The production was handled by Arcadia Pictures, whose documents revealed the project's final cost. As a result, Universal received approximately $127.8 million in compensation from the British government, reducing the net cost to $531 million.
What Is 'Jurassic World Dominion' About?
The story is set in a world where dinosaurs coexist with humans: they forage for food in fields, soar through the sky with birds, and roam along highways. In the Alps, there's a special reserve where the company Biosyn conducts DNA testing on dinosaurs.
In an attempt to correct their mistake of creating a rare species of locust, scientists steal a cloned girl named Maisie Lockwood from environmental activist Claire and dinosaur trainer Owen.
Despite Being a Commercial Hit, 'Jurassic World Dominion' Is a Run-Of-The-Mill Blockbuster

The third installment of the Jurassic World franchise feels like an overpriced B-movie. While it features incredible action scenes, such as dinosaur riding and rooftop chases, the hastily written plot and abundance of characters force the filmmakers to rush the story, not devoting enough time to the drama.
As a result, viewers impatiently wait for the camera to switch from the boring humans to their favorite dinosaurs.
While the movie received mixed reviews from critics, it was a commercial success, grossing over $1 billion worldwide – adding to the box office are Blu-ray sales, streaming services, and merchandise licensing.
The secret to its success is simple: dinosaurs. Highly rendered prehistoric reptiles still have the power to sell anything.
