J.J. Abrams' new series, Duster, is a real treat for anyone nostalgic for the '70s. Now, let's take a closer look at why you should jump into the backseat of Duster.

J.J. Abrams returned to the small screen with a show that traveled back in time straight to the 70s with all its contradictions, style, and recklessness.

Duster doesn't try to reinvent the genre – it skillfully plays on nostalgia by mixing crime drama with elements of a road movie and a pinch of absurdity. Here's why this show deserves much more attention than it currently gets.

What Is 'Duster' About?

Mid-1970s. Nina Hayes joined the FBI and took on the case of crime boss Saxton, a weapons dealer. Nina contacts Jim Ellis, the driver who carries out various assignments for Saxton.

Not only does the FBI agent convince Jim to become an informant by threatening him with prison for his criminal connections, but also reveals that Jim's brother was killed by his boss, who controls everything, including the police. Though suspicious, the driver is forced to cooperate.

'Duster' Is a Perfect and Accurate Recreation of the 70s

The series beautifully captures the era's essence. It has everything: a soul soundtrack by Marvin Gaye, cowboy boots, gangsters, and bowling. Visually, Duster is a feast for the eyes with its desert landscapes, neon signs, and retro cars.

Although the show has been criticized for having too many side storylines, Duster captures the frivolous spirit of the 1970s so well that all the criticism is irrelevant.

'Duster' Is Worth-Watching for Its Brilliant Main Acting Duo

Jim Ellis embodies the classic action hero of that time – a long-haired man with a snow-white smile and a sad look.

Josh Holloway, who played the driver, became famous for his role in Lost, on which Abrams also worked. Fifteen years later, the actor and director are reuniting.

Rachel Hilson, who played Nina, shines no less brightly. While Jim is defined by his cold calculation and ability to find a way out of even dead-end situations, Nina's energy and ability to break through even the most impassable obstacles ensure that you won't get bored.

What Did Critics & Viewers Think of 'Duster'?

IndieWire critic Ben Travers gave Duster a B, saying:

“Duster gets so many of the little things right, it's easy to set your quibbles aside and just enjoy the ride.”

  • Duster has 92% from critics and 84% from viewers on Rotten Tomatoes.

  • On IMDb, the series has a score of 7.1/10.
