Is Hell or High Water Worth Watching?

One of the movies that should be at the top of your must-watch list if you're looking for a good western is Hell or High Water, written by Taylor Sheridan and directed by David Mackenzie. The film was released back in 2016, and since then it's made such an impact on both critics and audiences that it continues to receive overwhelmingly positive reviews to this day.

In best neo-western fashion, the movie follows the story of a family that goes above and beyond the law to protect their ranch. Two brothers, played by Chris Pine and Ben Foster, carry out a series of bank robberies to keep the ranch afloat, but are pursued by two Texas Rangers.

The film's high ratings of 97% from critics and 88% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes come from the balance between the thrill of the crime and the reality of the struggle to keep the ranch going. Brilliant writing combined with outstanding acting and stunning scenery are three components that create the most believable Western to date.

Surprisingly, the film failed to become an instant hit in the year of its release. With a budget of $12 million, it managed to gross $37 million at the box office, making it commercially successful, but hardly competitive with other releases of the year.

Nevertheless, Hell or High Water remains one of the movies worth watching for any fan of the western genre. Taylor Sheridan’s best-rated western film to date is currently available to stream on Paramount Plus.
