This Don Bluth Sci-Fi Gem Only Has 51% on RT From Critics – But Deserves So Much More
This bold, beautiful, intelligent science fiction project has been unfairly forgotten.
Director Don Bluth has given viewers countless amazing animated movies – every child of the 90s knows All Dogs Go to Heaven and The Land Before Time.
However, one of his directorial projects was unfairly underrated. The failure of the sci-fi animation Titan A.E. Yet, a quarter of a century later, the film remains a true gem – a bold, beautiful, and incredibly optimistic work of science fiction.
What Is 'Titan A.E.' About?

By the year 3028, humanity had entered space. The talented scientist Sam Tucker built the incredible ship Titan, but the Drej aliens attacked Earth and destroyed the planet. Sam managed to save his young son, Cale, and give him a valuable ring.
Following the attack, part of the population perished and the rest became refugees. Fifteen years later, Cale works as a mechanic in space. He is found by Captain Korso, a former colleague of his father.
Korso reveals that the ring is a map that will lead them to the Titan. The Titan is a ship capable of reuniting humanity and giving them hope for a new life.
'Titan A.E.' Is a Mature Science Fiction Work With a Big Heart
Don Bluth was an advocate for animations exploring serious topics. Titan A.E. opens with an apocalypse, and the rest of the story resembles an epic adult sci-fi: the characters wander between planets, fall into deadly traps, get wounded, and question their decisions.
The scope of the journey is astounding – the crew visits different worlds and encounters unusual alien races. As a live-action movie, such a story would surpass any Star Wars film.
Unlike the main characters in many masterpieces of the time, who were portrayed as positive as possible, Cale is a dubious character – he's cynical and burdened by the past. He doesn't understand the need to search for the Titan and has no faith in the future of humanity.
Even 26 Years Later, 'Titan A.E.' Is Still Relevant

Titan A.E. explores several timeless topics. First, the viewers witness the main character's growth: Cale transforms from a lonely and hurt teenager into a brave man willing to sacrifice himself for a higher purpose – an honest, challenging, and deeply human transformation.
Second, the movie shows that hope remains even after a global catastrophe. Despite the fact that humanity is fragmented and focused solely on survival, we must cling to the elusive chance to make things right – a notion that is especially valuable now.
