The first episode is almost an hour long and packed with action scenes that rival those of a full-length movie. From explosions to battles to magical seals, everything is lovingly crafted and meticulously detailed.
While the production quality does fade a bit later, the overall quality remains high. The monsters, mutated animals infected with a demonic plague, deserve special mention.
Kai, a studio without any major hits, clearly gave it their all. Director Hiroyuki Takashima, known for Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation, brought a thoughtful fantasy atmosphere to the project despite the darker setting.

Xylo's squad consists of actual villains, including a serial killer, a kleptomaniac, a smuggler, a con man, a mad king, and a half-zombie. Yet, the writers evoke sympathy for these characters, never forgetting the terrible things they've done.
Compared to them, Xylo and Teoritta seem almost sweet and cuddly – he's a rude man who hates the gods, and she's a naive sweetheart willing to give her life for her knight. Their interactions are the highlight of Sentenced to Be a Hero.
The immortality mechanic is especially noteworthy: the heroes are resurrected again and again, but each resurrection erases some of their memories and sanity.
