32-year-old photographer Jeff Kohlver frequently visits teen chat rooms. One day, he meets 14-year-old Hayley online. The girl quickly agrees to meet and soon enters Jeff's home.

Jeff, a seasoned child molester, thinks he has found his next victim, however, Hayley turns out to be far more than that. She suspects Jeff of pedophilia and of being involved in her friend's disappearance.

Hayley has been monitoring Jeff on social media for some time, and her suspicions are well founded. After a couple of drinks, the unsuspecting photographer passes out and wakes up strapped to a table.

'Hard Candy' Is a Bold and Masterful Subversion of the Rape-Revenge Genre

Hard Candy isn't a typical rape-revenge movie – the movie subverts familiar tropes by transforming a teenage girl from victim to hunter.

Hayley isn't a malevolent demon but rather a ruthless inquisitor who kills not for pleasure but for social justice. Her actions evoke complex emotions – she simultaneously frightens and inspires admiration with her determination.

Patrick Wilson's portrayal of Jeff leaves viewers doubting his guilt until the very end. Hard Candy maintains suspense by gradually revealing new details and offering no easy answers.

'Hard Candy' Became One of the Strongest Performances for Both Elliot Page & Patrick Wilson

Hard Candy was a breakout role for Elliot Page, showcasing his ability to carry a film. The actor delivered a memorable performance as Hayley, a character who blends naivete with ruthless determination.

The character isn't simply seeking revenge, she's conducting a psychological experiment, forcing Jeff (and the viewers) to question the concept of justice itself.

Patrick Wilson also delivers one of the best performances of his career as a man who evokes both revulsion and sympathy. Page and Wilson engage in a tense game of cat and mouse where every move could be their last.
