Megan Fox in a high school horror that’s both terrifying and hilarious? Yes, please. This is a love letter to one of the most underrated pieces of cinema of the early 2000s.

Some movies just don’t get the love they deserve when they first hit theaters. But we all know that the beauty of Hollywood failures lie in their ability to make a comeback. It’s a phenomenon that’s as fascinating as it is frustrating: why do some films only get the recognition they deserve long after their release? Is it the timing, the marketing, or all together?

Either way, we're glad that some good movies that once flopped resurfaced years later to fulfill their destiny of becoming highly appreciated.

Today we’re diving into one of those movies. This is a film that was brushed off as a shallow teen flick but has since clawed its way into cult classic territory.

Jennifer's Body (2009): A Relatable Horror

Jennifer’s Body, starring Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried, was a biting commentary on female friendships and societal expectations.

The movie follows Jennifer (Fox) who, after becoming possessed, turns her high school into a literal hunting ground, targeting only her male classmates. Her best friend Needy (Seyfried) is the only one who could potentially stop her.

There’s something so relatable about Jennifer. She’s the popular girl, sure, but she’s also deeply lonely and filled with insecurities. Who hasn’t felt like they didn’t belong, even when everyone seems to adore them?

Megan Fox absolutely nailed this duality of Jennifer. And it’s such a shame the movie was so poorly received at first.

Jennifer's Body Gained Cult Following in the Last 16 Years

When Jennifer's Body first hit theaters, it was marketed as a sexy horror movie designed for male audience. Big mistake. Huge. This was never intended to be that. Its humor and focus on female friendships were lost within the marketing campaign and consequently the movie flopped at the box office.

However, over the years viewers have rediscovered it, and it’s now celebrated as the feminist horror-comedy it always was. As Isabella Carver (Yiara Magazine) wrote:

“Watching Jennifer have agency over her body and use it for her gain rather than subjecting herself to be consumed for male pleasure was critical representation.”

The movie also brilliantly mixes together dark humor with genuine emotion. It’s funny, it’s scary, and it deserves a rewatch or two.

Jennifer's Body available on Fandango at Home, Amazon Video and Apple TV. Do yourself a favor and watch it this Women’s Month.
