Is House dead or alive at the end?

The finale of House M.D. turned out to be tragic – in the eighth season it turned out that James Wilson, an oncologist and close friend of House, has cancer. The experimental treatment did not help, and he has no more than six months to live.

In the last episode, House found himself in a difficult situation – he is about to go to jail for an incident at the hospital, and his punishment will be severe, for this is not his first crime. And the worst part of it is that the sentence is going to be longer than the time that Wilson has left to live.

House can't let his best friend die of cancer alone – he starts looking for a way out. While coming up with the plan, Gregory also has hallucinations of Kutner, Amber, Stacy, and Cameron.

Eventually, House comes up with the solution in his own style and fakes his death. The police discover the charred remains of a man with documents in the name of Gregory House. Previously, House had forged dental records that experts used to pronounce the doctor dead.

Colleagues are shocked, everyone close to House, including Wilson, comes to the funeral. But when Wilson receives a message from House, he realizes that Gregory is alive and that everything he did was for the sake of their friendship and for Wilson himself.

However, this ending, with House looking more like Sherlock Holmes, seemed forced and out of character to many fans. The most popular fan theory about the finale of House M. D. is that Gregory really died in a fire, and the meeting with Wilson was nothing more than a pre-death hallucination.

Besides, such a finale seems to be the most logical to many. Considering the path House has taken and the hardships and trials he has endured, his death is a strong and fitting end to the life of an outstanding doctor.

Another popular theory is quite mystical – according to it, House is still dead, and Wilson decided to spend his last five months with the ghost of his best friend.
