Some even consider this Shyamalan's classic superior to The Sixth Sense. And trust us, it really is that good!

Some horrors possess an unexplainable, captivating quality. They terrify us to the core. Yet we remain glued to our seats, unable to look away. No matter how disturbing or terrifying the scene in front of us is, we just can't stop watching.

A movie we're going to talk about today is exactly like this and even more. It is able to make us laugh one moment and grip our armrests the next. This is truly a masterfully done film that keeps its viewers perpetually off-balance.

Intrigued? Well, let's not waste any more time.

Signs (2002): A Family Drama Meets Alien Invasion

Signs follows Graham (Mel Gibson), an ex-reverend in crisis following a personal tragedy. He lives with his brother Merrill (Joaquin Phoenix ) and two children. Graham's world turns upside down when mysterious crop circles appear in his cornfield. It could be a prank or something way more sinister. We bet you already know what this turns out to be.

Even though Signs has this alien invasion plot, it focuses more on family dynamics, faith and fear.

Even the director Bong Joon-ho (Memories of Murder, 2003; Parasite, 2019) in an interview to IndieWire praised the movie, saying:

“Even though it deals with the alien invasion rather than creatures, I liked the fact that the film focused on the Mel Gibson‘s family, not on the aliens.”

Signs Creates Lasting Nightmares

The film's impact on audiences is huge, even years after its release. As one Redditor wrote:

“As a kid this gave me nightmares. The chilling scene where the alien walks across the ally delivers just the right amount of spine tingle. Signs is probably one of the best alien movies. I think this is Shamalans best work. I think [it] is even better than the sixth sense due to the fact that it has great reviews.”

We think that this is the most relatable opinion of the movie. Signs is all about building tension through what we don't see. This movie plays on the feeling when you think something's watching you from the dark.

So for those brave enough to get on this haunting journey, Signs is available on Sky Store, Disney+, Amazon Video, or Apple TV+. You might want to keep your lights on though. Just saying.
