This year, the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature went to a film that sends an extremely powerful message to the world.

No Other Land is a 2024 documentary that got a lot of attention long before it won the Oscar, but even more after.

Directed by a collaborative team of Palestinian and Israeli filmmakers, Basel Adra, Hamdan Ballal, Yuval Abraham, and Rachel Szor, the film offers an intimate and unflinching look into the lives of Palestinians in the West Bank's Masafer Yatta region.

Spanning from 2019 to 2023, the documentary captures the challenges faced by Palestinian communities under Israeli occupation. It interweaves personal stories with multiple focuses on particularly important ones. For example the developing friendship between Palestinian lawyer Basel Adra and Israeli journalist Yuval Abraham that is set against the backdrop of the ongoing conflict.

Is No Other Land Worth Watching?

It's a rare time when both critics and audience share the same judgment about a movie, and this time they agreed that the movie is worth 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The reviews mostly state that it's a unique movie, and the fact that it comes from united fronts of conflicting powers makes the statement even bolder.

“I think everyone should watch it -- especially for people who otherwise, intentionally or unintentionally, bury their heads in the sand far too often. It's an important piece of work. Make no mistake. It's a hard watch. It's informative; not entertaining. Yet another reminder how disgusting and cowardice humanity can be through action and inaction, commission and omission, ignorance, and depraved heart,” Redditor SteubenvilleBorn said.

However, despite winning the Oscar, No Other Land has faced distribution challenges, particularly in the U.S. It has not secured an American distributor, which limits its availability to audiences, though some theaters are choosing to screen it independently.

No Other Land is indeed a poignant and thought-provoking documentary that offers a personal perspective on the complexities of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

In the U.S., it isn’t possible to stream No Other Land legally yet.
