The series was quietly sitting on streaming even before Landman arrived.
Following Taylor Sheridan ’s beloved formula of combining harsh Western-y plot and family ups and downs, Landman came as yet another major hit, the return of which sometime in the future is now expected more than anything else.
Paramount's long-standing collaborator, Sheridan has been known as a master of Western genre, able to turn a very specific story into something a much wider audience will find appealing.
However, the writer-director isn’t the one who is that fond of the genre, and fans of Sheridan’s shows might have missed out on another similar series that arrived on Netflix even earlier than Landman’s first episode was dropped on Paramount+.
Netflix’s Territory Is an Australian Version of Sheridan’s Landman
Released in October of 2024, Territory is pretty much like Landman, though in this case they don’t have anything to do with the oil production, adapting the plot to more Australian-ish realities.
Set in fictional Marianne Station, which is the world’s largest cattle station, Territory follows the Lawson family that owned those lands for generations and isn’t eager to give it away to some stranger. However, this option suddenly becomes more probable than ever after family patriarch Colin Lawson's favored son Daniel dies in a mysterious ride accident.
With no one else in the family to be able to inherit the lands, Marianne Station soon turns into a titbit for rival cattle station families, gangsters, Australian Aboriginal elders and mining tycoons who are set to shake the family’s world even more, threatening to take away everything they have.
Territory Is Landman’s Perfect Replacement With a Solid RT Score
Masterfully blending themes of struggle for power and family dynamics, the Australian show is yet another take on the formula that currently holds Taylor Sheridan’s legacy as a show creator.
However, there’s no need for you to worry whether you’ll have to wait for another season this time: initially planned as a mini-series, Territory comprises six episodes only and seemingly doesn’t have any plans for future installments.
Despite having quite a short run, the show managed to wrap it up with style, landing a score of 86% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Viewers were harsher this time though, granting Territory a score of only 53%, but things still might change when Landman’s fans discover this hidden gem on Netflix while searching for something Taylor Sheridan-ish.
