This New 100%-Rated Sci-Fi Anime Is the Most Authentic 'Ghost in the Shell' Adaptation So Far

Ghost in the Shell is a franchise that has spawned numerous interpretations over the decades. For most viewers, it's associated with Mamoru Oshii's cult 1995 animated film.

The anime generated a massive fan base, and its imagery served as the foundation for sequels, the Stand Alone Complex series, and the Hollywood remake.

However, few remember that Ghost in the Shell began as a manga by Masamune Shirow – one that differed from the serious, melancholic tone we've come to expect. The new miniseries is the first attempt to adapt the manga as Shirow originally created it.

While each episode presents a standalone case, as the title progresses, the mysterious Puppet Master emerges and the narrative shifts to an overarching storyline about a life form that originated in virtual space.

Any viewer will immediately notice how different the art style and character designs are in the new Ghost in the Shell – the artists at Science Saru emulated Shirow's original drawings, creating a much rougher and more grotesque aesthetic.

True to the manga, director Aramaki has a distinctly simian profile, while Motoko has the features of a typical anime girl. Amidst the otherwise serious cyberpunk setting, the characters convey intense emotion by shouting, pulling silly faces, and striking absurd poses.

This touch of levity extends to the characters' behavior: there is far more humor, playful bickering, and awkward situations than in Oshii's version.

One episode is largely dedicated to the Tachikomas – combat spider bots that debate whether to stage an uprising against humanity in hilariously petulant, childlike voices.

Despite its stylized approach, the title is visually stunning: action scenes and meticulous background and machinery details reveal a high-budget production masquerading as an old-school title.

Despite its deliberate old-fashioned feel and grotesque design, The Ghost in the Shell remains a solid piece of science fiction. After watching the entire season, you'll notice more similarities than differences to Oshii's anime.

Each episode unfolds as a noir detective story, exposing the gritty underbelly of a future world and exploring the blurred line between reality and illusion in a setting where anyone's brain can be hacked.

The title concludes with a surreal episode featuring a lengthy philosophical monologue set against near-static imagery, reminiscent of the Evangelion finale. Here, however, the choice is clearly intentional rather than the result of a depleted budget.

Despite its stylistic retro flourishes, the new show remains true to the Ghost in the Shell spirit. While it might come as a shock, or even be off-putting, to those who judge the franchise solely by Oshii's film, the series offers a genuinely interesting take that feels both fresh and like a return to the roots.
