This New Romcom With a Divisive RT Score Is Netflix #1 Movie Right Now

The Mark Waters-directed romcom is ruling over the streaming’s global top chart less than a week after being released.
You might argue, but romcoms just never go out of style, and Netflix is a pretty constant proof of that.
The streaming service has recently added a bunch of new long-awaited movies to its collection, including the Amy Schumer-led absurdist-ish comedy Kinda Pregnant which stayed on Netflix’s top charts for quite a long time before being brought down by another fresh arrival.
One more romantic comedy, the movie has been getting all the possible attention from the streaming’s audiences in the last couple of days, at some point even becoming Netflix’s most popular flick at the moment.
La Dolce Villa Is a New Big Hit on Netflix
Released on streaming on February 13, the movie was quick to catch everyone’s eye, less than a week later becoming Netflix’s number one movie in the global top chart, according to FlixPatrol.
Directed by Freaky Friday and Mean Girls’ Mark Waters, La Dolce Villa stars Scott Foley as Eric, a successful businessman whose plans are thwarted by some disturbing news from Italy, where his daydreaming daughter Olivia bought a decaying villa.
Determined to turn the deranged mansion into an idyllic place, Olivia has no limits in spending her father’s wealth on making her dream come true, though Eric, in his turn, is determined to put it to its end.
Things suddenly change when he arrives in Italy, and, stunned by the picturesque views from the villa, he doesn’t know yet how much he’ll get attached to the country once there’s a chance for a romance.
La Dolce Villa Is a Streaming Hit With a Somewhat Controversial RT Score
Despite the movie having its best time in Netflix’s global top 10, the reviews for La Dolce Villa weren’t really flattering so far. While there’s no score from critics, who mostly praise the movie for its entertaining storyline, but then bring it down for lack of emotional hook, audiences seem to be divided as well.
On Rotten Tomatoes, La Dolce Villa holds a score of 58% from viewers, with some of them calling out the movie for poor writing and a pretty predictable plot line which isn’t relatable when it comes to “spoiled rich Americans struggling to make it in Italy,” as reviewer John S dubbed it.
Naturally, La Dolce Villa isn’t the first and isn’t the last movie on Netflix to keep mixed reviews and viewership records at the same time, but the latter might still be a bigger achievement than everyone’s acclaim anyway.
