Fans of the genre will enjoy following the potential suspects and the investigator's secrets.

The new Scottish miniseries The Dark is a classic detective thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very last minute as you try to catch a serial killer. It's based on Scottish author GR Halliday's debut novel From the Shadows.

Here's why The Dark is a must-watch for fans of the detective and thriller genres.

What Is 'The Dark' About?

The body of Jason, a young man, was found in a picturesque Scottish valley. The killer had strangled him and then placed the body on display. Five years ago, Jason's brother disappeared without a trace, and the authorities still don't know what happened to him.

The following night, another young man, Rob, disappeared from his room – he was poisoned, dragged out the window, and left by a stream. A serial killer has emerged in the Scottish wilderness and is killing every day.

Experienced Detective Inspector Monica and her partner Connor take on the case. Many local residents come under suspicion, including social worker Michael and even a couple of hunters who often turn up near crime scenes.

'The Dark' Is a Worthy Thriller With a Dark Atmosphere and Psychological Depth

The Dark is a classic thriller with a gripping plot. The story follows an investigation into a series of brutal murders against the backdrop of the perpetually bleak British landscape. A serial killer plays cat and mouse with the police while the media becomes outraged and horrified.

Considering the exceptionally gloomy weather, Scotland seems like a depressing place. It's no surprise that a serial killer has emerged in these lands of melancholy and personal insecurities.

As befits the genre, Monica is a talented but troubled detective: she often disobeys her superiors, doing things her own way and treating her partner with disdain.

Most importantly, however, Monica fell into an authoritarian cult several years ago. She escaped, but her traumatic past won't let her go – the half-crazy Philly, who was also in the cult, is following the police officer.

There're No Stars Among the Creators & Cast of 'The Dark', but This Doesn't Affect Quality

The Dark is based on the detective novel From the Shadows by GR Halliday, the author's debut work. Halliday also wrote two books about the Monica Kennedy investigations. The six-part miniseries was directed by the experienced filmmakers Gilles Bannier and Emma Sullivan.

While The Dark may not feature any major stars in its cast or production, that doesn't affect the quality of the final product – the show is sure to delight fans of thrillers about the investigation of a series of brutal murders.

While it's unlikely to appear on best-of lists by the end of the year, The Dark doesn't have any obvious flaws either.
