This Outlander Star Risked Her Family Ties for Acting

Although there are many actors who proudly say that they could never see themselves in any other career, there is another group who actually didn't take acting too seriously before it accidentally found them.

Outlander 's Sophie Skelton, who portrays Brianna Fraser on the show, is one of those people who had a career plan that never included the cameras or the theater stage. Skelton was supposed to be a surgeon, and she took her time studying to achieve her goal. But acting changed everything in her life, including her relationship with her parents.

Sophie Skelton Almost Became a Surgeon

Although Outlander is currently one of the most popular titles in the actress' filmography, she was already making her way in the industry before joining the cast in 2016. In fact, despite studying for a completely different career, Sophie Skelton has been performing on stage since the age of 7.

The road to stardom is never easy for any newcomer, but it is even harder without the support of family. Unfortunately, Skelton's parents did not take her change of heart about the profession lightly. In fact, as the actress admitted in an interview with Harper's Bazaar, they were disappointed in her choice.

“I wanted to be a surgeon for quite a long time as well, so I studied biology, chemistry, maths, English, further maths, all of that. So I think my parents were actually quite disappointed when I wanted to take the acting route. They love it now. They really like Outlander actually, so they were thrilled when I got the job,” she shared.

It is understandable for parents to worry about their child choosing a path that offers little security. An honorable and well-paid job as a surgeon is a safer part, especially if you are cut and well trained for it. But real acting talent is just as rare, and all Outlander fans are very happy to have Skelton on the show as their Brianna Fraser.

Fortunately, Brianna's journey on screen is far from over. The actress will reprise her role in season 7, part 2, which will premiere on Friday, November 22.
